Organising Your Products for a Better Shopping Experience

Product Positioning

Hopefully, you have read our previous post regarding seasonal goods and planning ahead so that you have the right stock in at the right time. But, while having the right products in is vital, there are a few tips and tricks which can maximise these goods to their full sales potential.

The first thing sounds simple, but can be a little difficult to achieve. However, it is extremely important. Lets say, for example, you have purchased a range of Halloween goods from Discount Wholesale. It’s mid-September and now is the time to order what you think will sell well. Once the stock has arrived, now it is time to think where in your store you would like to display the goods.

"It is important to keep all similar or related goods together in one place or section."

First and foremost, it is important to keep all similar or related goods together in one place or section. It may be all the new stock you have purchased e.g. all Halloween goods, but also any existing items you think could be tied into to sit alongside the new goods. If you have all related items near each other within your shop, it provides a cleaner and clearer shopping experience. In addition, it increases the chances of a customer buying not one, but 2 or 3 similar items as they can easily see products that may work well together. For example, they may visit to buy a Halloween mask, see the Halloween sweets nearby and buy both.

This does not only apply to big events such as Halloween or Christmas, but to all of the goods in the shop.

Window Display

This may not be an option to all shops, however it is an often overlooked and underestimated promotional tool. As an example, we will use Halloween again. If you have window space, then you can use some of the stock that you have purchased to create a window display for Halloween. It will cast potential customers eyes and if you actually remove products from their packaging it will help towards the display being more effective. Yes, it will technically cost you the money of the goods ordered, however in relative terms, this is a very cheap and cost effective way of creating trade.

The same could be said when displaying the merchandise inside the store. You could create a similar display inside, with a few selected goods removed from their packaging to show potential customers how good the gods are or so that they can get a hands-on feel before committing to purchasing.

Seasonal Trends and Planning Ahead

It is very important that your shop represents what people are buying in the current season. There are many to look out for and this guide will hopefully help you to know who, what, why and when.

First of all, some trends/seasons/times of the year that can be beneficial to your business.

For example, August. August is the end of the British summer. Hopefully you already have items for sale related to summer, such as disposable BBQ’s and sun lotion, so they should continue to sell. But, it is also prime festival season. Camping essentials should see an upturn in sales and especially if there is a music festival relatively near to your shop’s location. Not only that, but by the end of August and start of September, the Back to School push starts in earnest.

"In order to make the most of such events and potential sales, a plan for upcoming events is the best way to start."

In order to make the most of such events and potential sales, a plan for upcoming events is the best way to start. Simply write down or print of the months of the year and write next to each one any events (e.g. Mother’s Day, Easter, Christmas etc) or seasonal happenings (e.g. Snow in January, sun in July etc) and when you next come to ordering goods, bear these in mind. Another thing of note is to plan well in advance or at least have some sort of idea which type or kind of products you would like order well before each date.

Here is a very quick and brief run-down of events that happen each year so you can form a basis to your list.

February - Valentine’s Day = Gift type goods e.g. small teddies, sweets etc.
April - Mother’s Day = Small gifts suitable for Mums e.g. perfume gift sets, chocolate June - Summer is here, or at least very close = Holiday items e.g. lotion, sun glasses etc.
Father’s Day - Small gifts suitable for Dads e.g. shower gift sets
July - Summer well into the swing of things = BBQ e.g. disposable BBQ’s, fire-lighters etc.
August - The end of summer is nigh but a month filled of music festivals = Camping e.g. tents, torches, sleeping bags etc.
October - Halloween! Ideally order the stock at the end of September so you can have a whole month on sale. e.g. masks, sweets, costumes, toys etc.
November - Christmas is a month away, all Christmas stock should be on sale e.g. wrapping paper, decorations, sweets, toys, the full works!
December - Time for last minute Christmas shopping.

Don’t forget, however, events that do not happen every year, but still provide a platform for sales. A great example would have been the 2012 London Olympics, with a whole host of Olympic-related products for sale. Other such opportunities exist within in sport such as:

Football - A World Cup or Euro event can provide your business with the chance to sell football and England related goods. If England have qualified for an event, this is of course a big help! Products could include: Footballs, flags and anything with the St. George’s Flag printed on it!

Benefits of Buying From an Online Importer

Succeeding in the retail industry depends hugely on choosing the right product at the right price at the right time for your target market. Offering your customers fresh and exciting product lines will not only ensure that they are kept happy but are likely to return again and again. Once you know which product lines you would like to sell, it’s time to locate your stock from the best possible source – an experienced, reliable online importer like Discount Wholesale. Whether you’re a part time ebayer, small boutique shop or a large multinational company, an online wholesaler can provide you with the quality stock you need as well as many other PRODUCT benefits.

Price

One of the biggest benefits from buying from a wholesaler is the ability to buy in bulk, reducing prices significantly. This also allows retailers to be competitively priced.

Range

Most wholesalers will specialise in a specific market or a niche product selling anything from clothing and electrical equipment to discount goods or homewares. Due to the large warehouse space where these products are held, wholesalers are able to stock a significant and varied number of products allowing retailers to constantly replenish their outlet with new lines.

"Being able to purchase goods from a wholesaler quickly is an integral part of the business."

Online

If retailers want to run a successful business, being able to purchase goods from a wholesaler quickly is an integral part of the business. Buying from an online wholesaler gives you this benefit by allowing you to purchase goods 24/7, retailers are able to access key information all day and night placing an order at the click of a button.

Deliveries

Online wholesalers endeavour to dispatch orders as quickly as possible. Depending on which wholesaler you choose, orders can be dispatched the same day or the following working day, ensuring that retailers receive orders quickly so empty shelves can be replenished.

UK based

UK based wholesalers have the added benefit of being able to deliver orders quickly and efficiently. Wholesalers from overseas, such as China, tend to take a long time to deliver leaving retailers short of stock when an unexpected influx in sales occurs. Another added benefit of buying from a UK based supplier is having piece of mind that the business will meet trading standards.

Customer Service

Online wholesalers provide excellent customer service. Dedicated teams are available by phone or email during the working week giving retailers the opportunity to talk to an experienced wholesale representative.

Trust

Trusting your wholesaler is an integral part of your business. Without trust, you risk jeopardising your retail business. A good relationship between the two parties can be a trusting and mutually profitable partnership, requiring diligence and work in order for both sides to grow.

Why Retailers Need to Plan Ahead for the Busy Christmas Season

Christmas is the busiest time of year for retailers worldwide. We all know that it’s going to arrive, but more often than not it creeps up on us and takes us by surprise. Most of us won’t even begin to think about what to buy family and friends until at least November (or Christmas Eve!), but if you run a business, planning so late in the year could seriously jeopardise your sales. For businesses, planning is key, it’s never too early only too late! So follow these few simple steps to maximise sales and stay ahead of your competition.

Planning

It may only be August, but we see a plethora of Christmas merchandise hitting the shops. It may all seem a little ‘crackers’ but given the doom and gloom of the current economy, retailers nationwide are looking at innovative and effective ways to woo customers in to their stores as early as possible. Preparing your store for Christmas this far ahead for some, may seem a little daunting but preparing months in advance will allow you to plan for your marketing, budgets, staff and stock.

Choosing a Supplier

Most retailers will already have a preferred supplier, but if you’re looking to cut a few costs this year, choose a highly reputable online wholesaler. Wholesalers allow retailers to purchase stock at a discounted price without compromising quality. They hold many advantages as they allow retailers to order online 24/7, speak to industry experts and arrange fast delivery ensuring that merchandise arrives well in advance of the Christmas flurry.

"Last minute orders may not arrive in time so it’s important to plan ahead."

Choosing Christmas Stock

Choosing stock for your store can be tricky. Whilst overstocking is dangerous, last minute orders may not arrive in time so it’s important to plan ahead. Study your market, what products are likely to be in high demand? With a good inventory line up, you can guarantee that your customers will be happy right up until Christmas Eve.

Marketing Your Christmas

Merchandise Marketing will be an integral part of any businesses Christmas strategy, so whether you’re a local shop, independent boutique or a multinational retailer you’ll need a well structured plan if you want to attract customers to your store. Depending on budget, retailers often promote their Christmas merchandise through flyers, emails, in-store posters as well generating buzz through social channels.

Experts recommend that campaigns should finish no later than 18th December. Regardless of how you choose to market your products, make sure communications are personalised where possible, allowing you to build relationships with your target audience. Now that you have planned for Christmas well in advance, chosen a supplier, ordered in good time and marketed your merchandise you should have a good chance of getting customers through your door! So sit back and relax (well sort of!).

Merchandising Your Store for the Back to School Range

Why? To Help Maximise Sales
Back to school shoppers tend to start buying goods for their children late summer, making August a key time for retailers to merchandise their school range. This is a time for retailers to maximise sales through effective marketing and merchandising. By utilising window space, creating eye-catching retail signage, displaying a wide range of products and allowing the customer to envisage items in their home, your shoppers won’t be able to miss your store during this back to school shopping craze.

Catch passers-by with your window display

Shop windows are an important part of display merchandising, if used properly they can help to draw customers into your store. Catching the attention of passers-by can be done by creating a visual display of the type of merchandise that your store sells. Utilise the space with full size window advertisements or by decorating your window with in-store merchandise, highlighting your product range.

In-store Signage

The secret to in-store retail signage is to create a sign that’s useful, has impact and is professional but not too overpowering. Use signage to point out key departments and sub-departments, such as the back to school lunch box range, clothes section as well the school stationery department.

"You need to consider the type of products that your target market is likely to buy."

Back to school product range

Once your target market is in your store, you need to consider the type of products that your target market is likely to buy. Every school kid needs the essential supplies such as bags, lunch boxes, back to school stationery, school clothes and footwear. But merchandising stock that’s at the height of popularity may have a significant impact on sales. Including branded goods like those stocked by us, such as the Hello Kitty range, Disney and the oh so popular boy band One Direction may see your back to school sales soar!

How will your products look at home?

How you display your items is an extremely important element of merchandising. By displaying your products in a certain way, you allow the customer to imagine how that product might fit in their home. Many customers can’t envisage merchandise when it’s packed away in a box. So when it comes to displaying your back to school range, ensure that your dummies are dressed head to toe with the latest range as well displaying a desk with all the newest stationery equipment

Why Retailers Should Source Goods from an Import Pound Shop Supplier

Since the global economy collapsed, people are still very wary of spending their cash. Consumers have had to knead out luxury spend, opting for necessity buys only. Whilst some businesses across the UK have struggled to survive in this harsh economic climate, pound shops have flourished up and down the country and are now a common sight along the high street. The consumer demand for cheaper products, combined with the affordable retail space has helped contribute to the thriving pound shop retail spaces that we all know and love today. But the demand for cheaper products has had a knock on effect to the retailer, because in order to survive they need to be able to source the cheapest possible products from wholesale pound shop suppliers.

Why/Benefits of buying from a Import pound shop supplier

Wholesale pound shop suppliers provide business to retailers who sell quality, discounted products to their consumers. Products range from discounted DIY, home essentials, camping & outdoor goods and office supplies. Buying from a wholesaler benefits the retailer as it gives them the chance to sell discounted goods that they might not have necessarily been able to purchase from the supplier direct. This is usually because retailers don’t meet the suppliers minimum order requirements, or if they buy direct they’ll be faced with higher prices compared to larger retailers who can usually meet the minimum order requirement.

New Market Opportunities

Wholesalers also provide small retailers access to goods they may not have been able to acquire had they tried to go direct, opening up new market opportunities. This is because wholesalers already have working relationships with suppliers, making it easier for them to acquire new products. This gives smaller retailers the chance to stock the latest products, giving them an advantage over their competitors.

"Buying in bulk shaves a substantial amount off the retail price."
Saving Money

Some retailers believe that the only reason why they can buy cheap goods is because ‘the stock has fallen off the back of a lorry’ and found its way to an illegitimate warehouse, but this simply isn’t the case. Pound shops and other small retail outlets can save money by buying from wholesale pound shop suppliers simply because buying in bulk shaves a substantial amount off the retail price. Another reason could be because the stock may be end-of-the-line, a newer model replaces the old, but it’s still perfectly useable.

Choosing to buy from a discount wholesaler can save retailers a lot of money, building a long term working relationship will allow both parties to negotiate better deals as time elapses. Despite the economic gloom and doom there’s much hope for pound shops and small retail businesses alike, especially through good working relationships with wholesale pound shop suppliers.
